Why you'd want to live in Lake Glenville
Spectacular Lake Glenville is home to numerous lake-front and lake-view properties. It is the highest man-made lake east of the Mississippi. Glenville is recognized as having pristine water and offers boating, swimming, and some of the best mountain-lake fishing in North Carolina. This six-mile-long lake is surrounded by woodlands and mountains and has several beautiful waterfalls and plenty of islands. While Lake Glenville is enjoyed by residents and visitors for its many recreational assets it is a working hydroelectric facility that provides electricity to Cashiers and much of the Southeast. Created in the Hamburg township of Jackson County, North Carolina in 1941 by the Nantahala Power and Light Company to be a reservoir for its hydroelectric facility. 1500 workers labored around the clock to complete the lake and dam as power was urgently needed to manufacture aluminum for World War II bombers. In 1951 the plant was named in honor of John Edward Sterling Thorpe who was the president of the Nantahala Power and Light Company. Thorpe Reservoir still appears on many maps today! Now managed by Duke Energy they have created docks for fishing, a beach and swimming area, and a beautiful hiking trail to the High Falls waterfall just below the dam. High Falls is a must-see on one of the seven scheduled release days!
